(6 Week Series)

Smart ParentsLearn practical skills with a unique experiential focus, that will help you improve your relationship with your children.  Too much or too little discipline? Learn skills and parenting tips for discipline that helps not hurts. Determine whose problem it is before you discipline.  We know that families that solve problems, build relationships.

This six class session discusses topics such as, Parenting with the end in mind, Choices and the “v” of Love, Effective Decision Making, What to do when your kids drive you crazy:  Emotional intelligence and anger management strategies, Goals of youth misbehavior and family skill building.

Youth Classes with Parent Components

Youth are faced with more choices and challenges than ever before and at much younger ages. Many experience strong emotions like anger but have never learned to manage their emotions in healthy and productive ways.

Emotional Intelligence & Critical Decision Making (8 Week Series)*

Learn parenting tips for discipline that helps not hurts.Designed for youth ages 11-18, Emotional Intelligence & Critical Decision Making is a skills-based curriculum specifically tailored to address concerns and difficulties youth are experiencing around making healthy decisions for themselves as well as how to recognize their emotions, especially anger, and manage them in non-violent ways.

This 8 week class covers such topics as: the decision making process, recognizing and weighing consequences, communication skills, types of power, conflict management, handling authority, the positive and negative consequences of anger, personal anger history, fair fighting, triggers and cool-downs, problem solving, and much more. Parent/guardian attendance is expected on the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th nights of the class.

The Conflict Center understands, that throughout a child’s development, parents play a critical role in the development of social and emotional skills. In recognition of this, we have built a parent-involvement component into each of our youth programs. Parents or guardians participate in half o the class sessions, those which focus on family communication and skill-building.

Youth who complete this course will be able to:

  • Identify multiple choices for any one decision
  • Consider potential positive and negative consequences of these choices
  • Stop and think before acting
  • Communicate needs, wants and feelings in a healthy and productive way
  • Understand the difference between passive, aggressive and assertive uses of power
  • Recognize and understand the positive and negative attributes of anger
  • Communicate needs, wants and feelings more assertively
  • Recognize the physiological signs of anger, as well as personal triggers
  • Utilize cooling off techniques to de-escalate their anger
  • Problem solve using the 6-step method
  • Identify realistic alternatives to fighting

Who should attend these classes?

  • Teens who want to learn how to make better decisions on a day-to-day basis
  • Teens who want to learn how to stop and think before they act
  • Teens who want to learn how to effectively communicate with authority figures.
  • Teens who want to learn how to use power in healthy and productive ways
  • Teens who want to learn how to better manage emotions and control anger
  • Teens who want to learn how to avoid fighting
  • Teens who want to learn how to problem solve
  • Teens that want to learn how to effectively communicate feelings and needs

PRICE: $100 per person for a full 8 week series.

*These classes are preventative in nature and are therefore designed for teens who do not have a criminal record, or for youth who are considered “first-time offenders.”

These classes are not designed for teens who have been convicted of multiple offenses or who have an extensive history of physical violence.
