Restorative Practices Educators’ Summer Institute
The Restorative Practices Educators’ Institute is a 3-day course designed for teachers, administrators, and wrap-around staff to learn and practice the foundations of restorative practices in a school setting. Days 1 and 2 of the Institute are dedicated to learning the foundational philosophy and day-to-day classroom implementation of restorative practices. Day 3 is designed to discuss and practice facilitating formal harm repair circles, used to address high-level and repeated harms.
Restorative Practices Summer Institute objectives:
- Define key terminology related to restorative practice implementation, including: “restorative practices”, “conflict”, “harm”, “informal conversations”, “formal harm repair circles”, “community building circles”
- Plan and facilitate community building circles that include age-appropriate activities for the students in their classrooms
- Practice engaging youth in non-violent conflict navigation through employing affective questions and “I”-statements
- Explore the formal harm repair process by engaging in role play practice as facilitators, support people, the person who caused harm, and the person harmed
- Identify the next steps needed for their schools/organizations to make paradigm shifts away from punitive responses to conflict and toward restorative responses to conflict
After attending the Restorative Practices Educators Institute, teachers, administrators, and wrap-around staff will have a strong foundational understanding of restorative practices and create action steps to begin or strengthen the implementation of restorative practices in their schools.
